Have you ever been in a conversation with someone who is talking about an idea they have that will help them succeed? Have any of those ideas sounded like something that has been done by someone who has succeeded decades ago? There's a reason for that.

Whether that person you were talking to knows it or not, they're on the tipping point of tapping into what every successful person does; reworking the ideas or methods of a past success into their program.

Corbett Barr nails this in his post titled The Difference: Copying your Mentors vs. Becoming your Best Self. If you talk to any successful person they have anywhere from 1 to a handful of influencers, but didn't COPY any of them. The key is to utilize what they do that works for you and flow that into your system.

There are plenty of articles on the uselessness of re-creating the wheel, but this one titled Don't Reinvent the Wheel, Unless You Plan on Learning More About Wheels by Jeff Atwood, counters that notion.  In essence, reinventing the wheel without properly delving into all other solutions will waste a lot of time and effort (And not just from you, but also from all of the research done already on what you're trying to recreate).

If you think that you're idea is groundbreaking and unique, you're probably wrong. With how long humans have been around in the world, or universe depending on your beliefs, you'd be hard pressed to find an original idea if you did your research.

Don't get down on this though, use it. Find out who has thought of those ideas or methods. If that person or organization is still around, see if you can learn under/from them. Study them and the detail of the idea as much as you can. The more you know their success and failures, the better off you'll be in your venture.

If you are, or have been, stuck on a brilliant idea that you have, learn about it. Don't try to reinvent the wheel, but study the past. By doing this you'll save money and time, and maybe gain a new mentor in the process.
