Yesterday my girlfriend and I were flying back to LA after a lovely 5 day vacation in Washington. I begrudgingly chose United Airlines to fly with only because they gave me a gift card for having a 13 hour layover a few months back. We got through the first flight without a hitch. The second flight though was delayed a few hours, but not for a usual reason.
All the passengers of the flight piled into the plane and took their seats. Once the pilots got to the plane from another delayed flight, we rolled out and taxied to the runway for the take off. While we were heading towards the runway, there was a very strange repeating sound that came from the airplane. Nobody paid much mind to it since the staff did not seem worried.
After a few more minutes of this, a man rang the help button above his seat. When nobody came, he rang it again and again until the attendant went on the intercom and stated, "Please be patient, we will help you once we take off. If this is an emergency then press the button again". Immediately he pressed it again and the attendant came over.
A few words were said and the plane taxied back to the terminal. The man was a plane mechanic for the company and said it was unsafe to fly. The passengers were angry and complained that he wanted to get it looked at. He was ushered off the plane, but he didn't stop. He went up to the supervisors and forced the mechanics to look at it.
Everyone stayed on the plane. Most were irritated, some were inquiring, some were anticipating what was going on. An hour later we were cleared to go and taxied back to the airstrip. They said nothing was wrong, but the sound was gone.
For speaking up, that man might have saved all of our lives that day. He utilized his knowledge and spoke up when no one else was going to. The crisis was averted.
Standing up for something will always have a negative push at first. It might even last longer than you logically thought it would, but the end result could save peoples lives or change the world. Think about that the next time you feel you should speak, and stand up for what you believe in.
