Winners Don't Pay Attention To Opponents

Winners Don't Pay Attention To Opponents: Phelps and Le Clos 200 Meter Butterfly Race
Found on Sporting News

Phelps versus Le Clos has been talked about since Phelps wanted in to this year's Olympics. The last time they matched up for the world to see, Le Clos beat him by the tiniest of margins. Phelps couldn't handle walking away with that loss, so he came back.

He lost, which meant he had to train harder, and get better before this event started. He saw nothing but more gold in his future. Le Clos stoked the fire before the Olypics started, but Phelps wasn't going to let anything divert his goal to finish as champion.

Le Clos was distracted. He was enamored by the popularity that came his way from winning gold. He still trained hard, but not more than he did the prior years. Basking in the glory of beating his idol, his regiments were left unchanged.

When the time came for the marquise match-up. Phelps was in another world. His focus was unmatched. Le Clos was all about Phelps. He would do multiple stare downs, get as close as he could to him at any time, and even shadow boxed in front of him to get in his head. The only concentration that was broken was his own.

The 200 M Butterfly was underway. Le Clos was right next to Phelps, looking at him every chance he could. Phelps never even knew he was there. Every atom in his body focused on Gold. In the race, Phelps blew through everyone and won his 20th Gold. Le Clos didn't even make it on the podium..

A quote that rings true, "Don't poke the Bear unless you're ready for it's Bite". Le Clos was definitely not ready.

Phelps beat him because he believed he would, Le Clos lost because he didn't want Phelps to win. In life, winning and succeeding are exactly like this.

If you're spending your time focusing on the person next to you, you'll have no time to actually win for yourself. Your concentration is broken. The toughest opponent in your life is yourself. Put the blinders on, focus on YOUR goal, and go for Gold. If you don't, that person next to you will.
